Thank you for this opportunity to discuss the new Office for Human Research Protections (0HRP) and to outline some of the initiatives the office is undertaking toward fulfillment of the Secretary=s committment to enhance protections for human research subjects and to improve the biomedical research process. Although the American people and Congress have long been avid supporters of biomedical research, events of the past several years threaten to further undermine the already shaken public confidence in this important endeavor.
