Antimicrobial activities of crude extacts and extracted phenols from gametophyte and sporophytic plant parts of fern, Adiantum capillus-veneris L. (Fam. Adiantaceae) were studied in summer (March-June), rainy (July-October) and winter (November-February) seasons against Bacillus subtilis A.R-2 (gram positive) and Escherichia coli XL1-Blue (gram negative). Both Uncle extracts and extracted phenols from the gametophytic and sporophytic plant parts showed antimicrobial activity. All the plant parts showed maximum phenols content in the rainy season (July-October). Immature pinnules of sporophyte contained the highest amount of phenols and thus showed maximum antimicrobial activity. Antimicrobial activity was greater in gametophytic extracts than the sporophyte. Gram positive bacteria were more susceptible to the plant extracts and extracted phenols than gram negative bacteria.
