The prevalence of obesity is on the rise throughout the developing world and is rising particularly quickly in Latin America.Obesity is a serious, chronic condition that contributes to numerous preventable diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). It has been estimated that 60% of the burden of chronic diseases will occur in developing countries by 2020. Although the associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and the prevalence of obesity are consistently inverse among women in developed countries,6 the associations between SES and obesity in developing countries are much less consistent.
