Two health education leaders I revered early in my career were Marshall Becker and Larry Green. They were prolific researchers and writers, and, whenever I saw them teach, I marveled at their intelligence, humor, and humanity. Whereas Dr. Green dedicated much of his research agenda to systems change, Dr. Becker focused more on individual behavior. What they shared in common, though, was the viewpoint that systems and individuals were inextricably linked. I recall Becker once wrote that changing behavior requires a "concomitant" investment in social reform. On the rare occasion when that word is just the right choice for something I'm writing, I offer a wistful homage to Dr. Becker, who passed away some years ago.
