INTRODUCTION Robert Marcus Gunn was a Scottish ophthalmologist who studied medicine at the University of St. Andrews and the University of Edinburgh, eventually moving to Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, where he practiced ophthalmology. He was a self-taught expert in the new skill of direct ophthalmoscopy, which he readily taught to others (Figure 1). He is best known for his teachings on the Marcus Gunn phenomenon of trigemino-oculomotor synkinesis or "jaw-winking"; Marcus Gunn pupil or "dynamic anisocoria"; the retinal findings of Marcus Gunn dots; and Gunn's crossing sign. EARLY YEARS Marcus Gunn was born in 1850 in Dunnet, Sutherlandshire, in northeast Scotland. He was the youngest son of a farmer of old Norse stock with two older brothers and sisters. Despite being farmers, his father and uncles were university-educated men, walking 100 miles each term (and back again) to study at the University of Aberdeen. As a boy, he loved outdoor pursuits, including shooting, botany, marine biology, and geology. He loved to collect Jurassic fossils from the Old Red Sandstone systems in Scotland.
