Field trials were carried out in Belarus between 1991 and 1993 with winter rye cultivated on a dernopodzolic sandy loam soil. P80:K120 (background), background + N30 (prior to sowing), or background + N60 (prior to sowing) were applied to experimental plots. Soil was analysed for available N, ammonium N and nitrate N from the plough (0-20 cm) and sub-plough (21-40 and 41-60 cm) layers at the following times: in the autumn after harvesting of the previous crop, but before application of fertilizers;in November, after application of fertilizers and after the autumn growth period of the crop; and in April, at the beginning of the spring growth period of the crop. Levels of mineral N in the upper 2 soil layers (0-40 cm) varied widely between Novemberand April, by ?5%. However, differences in levels of available N were minimal (4-7%). It is therefore recommended that soil analysis for subsequent top dressing of winter crops be carried out in November, as soon as air temperatures are consistently ?鳦 (average over a 24 h period).
