"Landscapers were green before 'green' was cool." This was the message firmly conveyed to me at the Florida American Society of Landscape Architects conference in Jacksonville last year. I had been invited to speak to an esteemed group of landscape architects, landscapers, nursery owners and supporting members of the landscaping community on the topic of green building and using sustainable design and construction practices. As a green building consultant with a commercial general contracting firm, I thought I'd have plenty to offer this eager group. However, to my surprise, I was gently chastised with the phrase, "We were green before all you people knew what 'green' was."
