One of the major challenges facing farmers in tropical areas is the development of sustainable land-use systems capable of meeting the basic needs of the ever-increasing population. At present, the farmers are faced with the problems of increasing deforestation, desertification, accelerated soil degradation and shortages of food, fodder and fuelwood. It is desirable to explore the possibility of mitigating soil fertility constraints, which have negated the productivity of existing cropping systems inthe area. This paper reviews the potential of agroforestry as an option for reversing the prevalent land degradation in the tropics.
