Growth and yield characteristics and dry matter production of new high yielding rice cultivars bred in the Tohoku region were examined in 1994 and 1995, and compared popular local cv. Hitomebore and Kiyonishiki. Grain yields of the cultivars examined ranged from 650 to 815 g m-2 in the order cv. Fukuhibiki > Kiyonishiki > Ouu 316 > Ouu 327 > Hitomebore. High grain yields in Fukuhibiki and Ouu 316 were mainly due to a large number of spikelets m-2, determined by the large number of spikelets per panicle. Fukuhibiki was also characterized by a high 1000-grain weight and a high percentage of ripened grains. The grain yield in Ouu 327 was mainly due to a fairly high percentage of ripened grains and high 1000-grain weight, although this strain had a small number of panicles and spikelets m-2. Compared with Hitomebore, Fukuhibiki and Ouu 316 with low plant height showed high total DM and extremely large panicle DW, which contributed to their large harvest indices.
