The scattered seismic waves due tosmall-scale random heterogeneities in the earth's crustcan be serious noises in the data from the seismicexplorations, aimed at the large-scale structures.They may lead to misinterpretations of the processeddata and hence wrong conclusions. This paper reviewsthe studies to assess such effects of scattering on theseismic explorations, using finite-differencesimulations of wave propagation. A series of numericalexperiments based on simple models of the heterogeneouscrust gave the following results: in reflection recordsections, the scattered waves could yield falsereflection patterns as well as smear the true ones; thewide-angle reflection surveys could not distinguishthe random heterogeneities from fine-scale layers; theapparent crustal velocities estimated from thewide-angle surveys were also influenced by theheterogeneities. Realistic modeling of theheterogeneities is also discussed based on availabledata, such as well logs and geological maps.
