STUDY AND DESIGN OF THE DISCHARGE PORT OF THE ONION SHALLOW DIGGING HARVESTER

This study aimed on the development of a discharge port device with gradually reduced width for the onion shallow digging harvester by which the onions can be smoothly discharged in strip on the discharge port of the bed, while the length of its discharge line must be greater than (or equal to) the charge port so that the obstruction would not occur. The discharge port, designed in this study, is in arc shape. The relevant design values are: the angle taken up by the arc length of the discharge port is 152°; the radius of the discharge port is 42 cm; the arc length (length of the discharge line) is 111.4 cm, 1.4 cm greater than 110 cm of the charge port; the centralized guide plate length is 70.3 cm; the distance between two ends of the centralized guide plate is 81.5 cm and the width of the discharge port is 74.1% of the charge port. This device of the discharge port is fitted on the onion shallow digging harvester. As a result of the field test, no obstruction of the discharge port or covering of the onion balls by earth is found. Onions which slide into the bed ditch is 0.24% on an average; the highest probability under the normal distribution is 0.6%; the average rate of loss is 0.1%, while the highest rate under the normal distribution is 0.37%. The filed tests showed that the operation capacity of the onion shallow digging harvester is 2.77 ha/day (8 hr) for five rows per bed and 3.29 ha/day (8 hr) for six rows per bed.
