The purpose of this study was to convert aqueous ethanol to liquid hydrocarbons over HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst (Si/Al = 45). The effect of water content in the feed, weight hourly space velocity (WHSV), reaction temperature and ethanol partial pressure were studied in the catalytic conversion. The optimal conditions for the formation of liquid hydrocarbons were as follows: water content 28% (w/w), WHSV 4.30 h~(-1), temperature 350°C and partial pressure 60 kg/cm~2. Under optimal conditions, the yield of liquid hydrocarbons reached 70%. Furthermore, in order to examine the activity and efficiency of catalyst, two long term reaction-regeneration experiments were performed under different regeneration protocol. The catalyst was regenerated under He flow for 30 min, followed by calcination at 550°C for 2 h under air flow of 25-mL/min. The results showed that catalyst regeneration cannot regain the full activity of the fresh one. The activity of catalyst was unrecoverable after 40 h no matter what regeneration protocol was used. However, appropriate regeneration protocol would improve the efficiency of catalyst by more than 10%. The major composition of liquid hydrocarbons from ETG was similar to that of 95 unleaded gasoline.
