Benzene exposure can result in chronic toxicity including aberration of the immune system. This study was set to determine the CD4+ count and its correlation to the novel urine biomarker for benzene exposure in urine, trans, trans-muconic acid (tt-MA), among a sample of Thai traffic policemen. A total of 39 policemen (all male) were included in this study. The average CD4+ count in these policemen was 21.2 +- 8.1 %. Concerning the regression analysis, the least square equation plot CD4+ count (Y) vs. urine ttMA (X) was 42 - 12X (r = .92, p = .04). The correlation study between urine ttMA and CD4+ count in this study showed a significant correlation. It implies that high exposure, estimated from high urine ttMA, suppresses CD4+ count. Of interest, monitoring for benzene exposure among at-risk workers is recommended. In cases with high urine ttMA from screening, special consideration should be given to the risk for immune impairment.
