Role of Immunodiagnosis of Important Tropical Fish-Borne Parasitic Zoonoses

Background: Fish is a common source of food for humans, and fish-borne parasitic zoonoses form an important infectious group of diseases in several countries. Examples of important fish-borne parasitic zoonoses are gnathostomiasis, opisthorchiasis, clonorchiasis, diphyllobothriasis, and anisakiasis. In the tropical world, fish are widely consumed by the local population. Some fish are contaminated with parasites and can cause fish-borne parasitic zoonoses, particularly if consumed raw or undercooked. Methods/Data base: This study is a mini-review of the roles of immunodiagnosis in the two important tropical fish-borne parasitic zoonoses, gnathostomiasis and opisthorchiasis. In addition, the other three temperate fish-borne zoonoses, clonorchiasis, diphyllobothriasis, and anisakiasis, are briefly discussed. Results/Conclusions: In order to prevent and control these important tropical fish-borne parasitic zoonoses, early diagnosis and prompt treatment are necessary. Stool examination is a basic tool for diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infection; however, some infections, such as gnathostomiasis, cannot be diagnosed by stool examination, and diagnosis then becomes difficult for the unfamiliar physician. Immunodiagnosis can be an alternative for the diagnosis of gnathostomiasis and opisthorchiasis.
