After nearly a century of research on blood, understanding of the basic blood flow mechanisms at the cellular level (at the scale of red blood cells, platelets, etc.) is still an open issue.Blood is a complex fluid: its flow properties mix mi-croscales (represented by red blood cells - RBCs) and the macroscale (the scale of the global flow).Understanding of blood flow should emerge from a bottom-up approach, RBCs interact in a nontrivial manner among each other and with the blood vessel walls. Blood flow resistance along with several blood diseases are regulated by the endothelial layer covering the interior of blood vessels. The endothelium is constantly stimulated by blood shear stress which triggers its activity. However, under microgravity shear stresses are reduced and affect the stimulation of the endothelium, an essential cause for cardio-vascular dysfunctions, leading ultimately to blood diseases, such as thrombosis. Here we describe some intricate dynamics of RBCs and their effect on blood rheology. We shall describe briefly the problematic of endothelium and the first basic questions that we have raised are in a concerted fashion between physics and life science.
