Cell membrane systems provide two important functions: (1) they establish abiological barrier to the extracellular environment and (2) they compartmentalize specialized and sometimes toxic biological reactions within the cell. Althoughthe different cellular membrane systems have diverse biological functions, theydo share some common features. All membrane systems are composed of a lipidbilayer that contains a full complement of protein complexes that facilitate per-meability, transport, and signaling. The focus of this chapter will be to describerecent advances in our understanding of cell membrane structure and function,and to highlight the specialized roles of mitochondria and peroxisomes. Furthermore, we will discuss how structure and function of these membrane systems areaffected by oxidative stress.
