A SLIM, GRACEFUL RAPTOR of open areas, the Northern Harrier is North America's sole representative of a genus whose 16 species claim territory on every continent except Antarctica. Perhaps because it is common throughout much of its North American range and conspicuous in open haunts (and perhaps, too, because its characteristic low, cruising flight appears casual and undashing, compared to other raptors), the bird is underrated. Its lack of flamboyance notwithstanding, the harrier is nevertheless anadmirable, versatile, dogged, and enigmatic raptor. If you were to study the many facets of raptordom — migration to breeding strategy, venatic versatility, and the like — and trace the lines of evolutionary development to their culmination, your search would probably end with the Northern Harrier.
