Voice authentication is suitable for internet services over cellular phones because a microphone is available on every terminal. We developed a prototype of voice authentication system to be used by the existing internet services over cellular phones. When a service requires user authentication, the communication is transferred from packet switch (Internet) to circuit switch (voice), then back to the packet switch after the authentication to resume the service under secure environment. The system configuration, a coordinated operation of packet switch and circuit switch, and its secure transfer mechanism for security are described in this paper. In general, voice authentication on cellular phone speech is more difficult than that on microphone speech or fixed-line telephone speech. In order to improve authentication accuracy for cellular phone speech, we proposed adaptation of acoustic models, phoneme-balanced connected digit patterns for enrollment and verification, and an authentication system using multiple utterances. As a result, comparable accuracy with fixed-line telephone speech is obtained in the evaluation based on the prototype system.
