摘要

ALA's newly elected president, John W. Berry, wants to spotlight three major focus areas during his presidential term, which begins July 2001 (AL, June/July, p. 8): equity of access, recruitment to the profession, and increasing member participation. In an interview with American Libraries, Berry said he is hoping to work with others in bridging the digital divide. "I would look at a collaborative effort with several partners, including the White House, the Department of Education, NCLISNational Commission on Libraries and Information Science , IMLS Institute of Museum and Library Services , and IFLA International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions , continuing former ALA President Barbara Ford's Global Reach, Local Touch initiative," which he said had resonance for him personally. Recruitment to the profession will have a significant focus on diversity within it. "Diversifying our member recruitment and professional recruitment to include and reflect the increasingly multicultural and diverse nature of our communities that libraries serve" is a priority, Berry believes. He also hopes to increase member participation via electronic means. "Of our nearly 60,000 members, we might have 15,000 to 20,000 attending our conferences. I want to try to reach out to those other grassroots members, because they have as much a need to be on the cutting edge as the members who are active and coming to conferences," Berry said. He envisions holding town meetings in libraries all over the country, using satellite and teleconferencing technologies as well as Internet conferencing. Berry has worked with these technologies: Since 1996, he has managed and directed NILRC, a consortium of 55 Midwest universities, colleges, and community colleges. The nonprofit corporation is a leader in the development and use of instructional resources and technologies, fostering satellite teleconferencing.
