Following catastrophic flooding in the early hours of June 20, North Dakota State University library is attempting to save some 100,000 bound journal volumes, some of which sat in contaminated waters for three days. Director Pamela Drayson said that after water started entering the library's basement, staff members were working after midnight to move volumes to higher shelves when windows and part of the building's foundation gave way, sending a total offour feet of water into the basement. The good news, Drayson told American Libraries, is that they had managed to save 99% of the archives of the Institute for Regional Studies, which include rare documents and photographs on North Dakota and the region. "That's marvelous because that's the stuff that's irreplaceable," said Drayson, who began as director just three days before the flood hit. As the floodwaters receded, library staff and volunteers who had been removing materials were told to evacuate the building on the morning of June 21 after tests showed the water was contaminated and the air was dangerous following the shutdown of the building's power and ventilation system. That day Munters Moisture Control Services began removing some 25,000 damaged volumes for transport to the firm's document-drying center in Chicago. Another 25,000 books, hopelessly soaked, went "straight to the Dumpsters," which at one point were being filled at a rate of one Dumpster per hour, Drayson reported. As campus and community volunteers formed human chains to remove materials, some 25 librarians from nearby public and academic libraries spent three days scanning bar codes of discarded items for inventory purposes. "They brought the special expertise," Drayson observed, while "the volunteers brought muscle." Although the floodwaters didn't reach the remaining 50,000 volumes, Drayson worried that many of them may be lost due to mold.
