Grasshopper and Henslow's Sparrows intrigue me not only because of their secretive behavior, but also because of their grassland habitats. Years ago, I saw my first Henslow's Sparrow at Big Meadows, a beautiful mountaintop clearing in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park. When my husband Pat and I lived in northwest Arkansas, I often took photographs of colorful wildflowers at Baker Prairie, a Nature Conservancy preserve located near Harrison. Nesting Grasshopper Sparrows skulked through the grassesthere, occasionally finding perches on sturdy plant stems to proclaim their territory with buzzing, insect-like calls.
