This month we discuss how aluminium smelters are fighting for survival as they are confronting some of the strongest headwinds in the industry’s history. As the first two months of 2012 passed, many aluminium producers have released their results for the fourth quarter of 2011. The majority of them have revealed that their operating costs rose substantially in 2011 compared to 2010. Together with rapidly falling metal prices in the second half of the year, it is not all that surprising that their profit margins have been hit.
