We had examined the health effects of diesel exhaust (DE) and diesel exhaust particles (DEP). DEP contains a vast number of organic compounds such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and quinone like compounds. DE and DEP caused essential characteristics of asthma such as chronic airway inflammation (accompanied by infiltration of eosinophils), mucus hypersecretion and airway hyper reactivity, via non-allergic or allergic reactions. It was suggested that active oxygen species were involved in non-allergic airway inflammation. On the other hand, it was suggested that IL-S production via Th2 cells and IgG1 formation were involved in allergic reaction. Furthermore, it was found that DE inhalation caused the decreased the numbers of daily sperm production. Abortion and teratogenic changes were also induced by mating between male mice exposed to DE and non-treated female mice. The main cause of the abortion and treatogenic changes may be due to the organic compounds in DEP.
