Comparing intubation performance of indirect laryngoscopes: Study design is crucial

Tampo et al.'s study [1] comparing performance of the Pentax Airway Scope~(TM) and the Airtraq~(TM) for tra-cheal intubation in an infant manikin, with and without chest compression, found that the times to view the glottis and intubate the trachea intubation were significantly shorter when using the Airway Scope than when using the Airtraq. The authors suggested that the Airway Scope can provide continuous observation of the airway structures from the moment the device is inserted into the mouth, whereas the Airtraq requires a practitioner to look into the eyepiece for a glottic view, and this is only possible at the middle to late phases of insertion. We suggest that two limitations in study design may have made interpretation of their findings questionable.
