THE evolution of the fruit industry over the past 125 years has been simple, yet incredibly effective. Growers take the knowledge of the past, keep what works, and throw out or — better yet — improve what doesn't. Progress may be nearly imperceptible at close range, but over time, developments can almost be measured in light years. Despite that steady improvement, there comes a time when internal challenges and outside forces cause us to refocus. Annual oversupplies, international competition, increasing government regulation, and buyer consolidation are taking a toll on — and taking control from — the grower.
