Several years ago, a friend in the fastener industry was excited because he was selected as one of the buyers his company was sending to the MWFA Trade Show in Chicago. It was his first show, and there was anticipation in his voice. Some weeks after the Chicago show, I called my friend to find out how his new experience had helped him. He began with a confusing story about being at the show yet not knowing exactly what to do or what was expected of him. He continued on about riding a train into the city, drinking with some people he knew from the trade show, and capping his exciting day with a long night drive home. This experienced buyer looked back at his first trade show with ambivalence at best. Though he had such high expectations, he left perplexed and unfulfilled because his company had provided him with nothing in the way of a mission, goal or agenda.
