Coal plant developers could lose more than $600 billion worldwide as building new renewable power plants becomes cheaper than new coal plants in all major markets, the Carbon Tracker Initiative warned in a March 11 report. New wind or solar is already cheaper than 60% of operating coal- fired power plants, according to the report from the financial think tank, which focuses on sustainability. The report also estimated that by 2030 at the latest, it will be cheaper to build new wind or solar capacity than to continue operating coal in all markets.
