Agricultural development in India has undergone many changes over the years. The changes specially in the last one and half decades are attributable to multiplicity of factors and there were sea changes in the character of the economy from mid 1991. The economy has now been channelized by pursuing a policy of liberalization with a view to globalizing the Indian economy and to integrate it with the world development process. Despite the enormous gains through technological intervention, the traditional character of agriculture could not be fully transformed as a result of varied agro-climatic situations prevalent in the state. The cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fruits, vegetables and species continue to be grown in various parts of the state. Some cropscontinue to be predominant in their growing areas. Certain crops are replaced by newly introduced crops. In order to realistically assess the production performance of these crops at state level, it is necessary to critically examine the pattern of productivity as well as trend in production of major crops.
