Coloration and pigmentation in petals of some cyanic Ranunculus cultivars

Petal coloration and pigmentation in four cyanic Ranunculus cultivars of the "Temari series", which are original cultivars bred by Kagawa prefecture agricultural experiment station in Japan, were investigated. 'Akane Temari', 'Beni Temari' and SakuraTemari' had reddish-colored petals, and 'Fuji Temari' had purplish-colored petals as compared with other cultivars. Three cyanic cultivars, 'Beni Temari', 'Sakura Temari' and 'Fuji Temari', contained anthocyanins and flavonols in the petals, and no carotenoid was detected in the pigment analysis by using the petals of these cultivars. However, 'Akane Temari' contained carotenoids as well as anthocyanins and flavonols. The anthocyanins were considered as the main pigments caused the coloration of petalsin all the cyanic cultivars, whereas the possibility that carotenoids also affected the coloration in the petals of 'Akane Temari' was also suggested. Although the main pigment in the cultivars with reddish-colored petals was a cyanidin glycoside, the main pigment in the petals of 'Fuji Temari' was a delphinidin glycoside. Except the main anthocyanins, the reddish-colored and purplish-colored petals also contained a small amount of cyanidin 3-sambubioside (Cy3GX) and delphinidin 3-sambubioside (Dp3GX),respectively. The results of deacylation treatment by using hydrochloric acid at room temperature suggested the possibility that the main pigments were acylated Cy3GX and Dp3GX.
