Improving productive efficiency of cucumber under greenhouse cultivation by grafting and bee pollination

High temperature and soil-borne disease are two limiting factor for cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.J production under greenhouse. Thus, the present study was to investigate the application of grafting and bee pollination for overcoming those critical issues. Cucumber 'No. 11' and 'CU-87' grafted with rootstock pumpkin 'Strong Man' had good compatibility. Compared with self-rooted seedling, the incidence rates of damping-off and Fusarium wilting disease declined significantly. Grafted plants had better plant height, shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight, nutritional element K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, and F content. It showed that grafting had certain effect on plant growth and nutrition uptake. The grafting treatment also increase 10.2 and 30.1% in fruit yield,meanwhile 25.7 and 33.6% increase in marketable fruit percentage. Besides, grafting did not enhance plant's photosynthetic efficiency but increase transpiration rate and stomatal conductance that promoting water and nutritional uptake and transportation.In addition, yield and marketable fruit rate also can be increased by 1.4 and 1.5 times with bee pollination in parthenocarpic cultivar 'No. 11'.
