Are ABA and ACC suitable thinning agents for peach and nectarine?

In peach, fruit thinning has to be performed every year with the purpose to improve fruit size and quality, prevent alternate bearing and maintain a vegetative/reproductive balance. Hand thinning is widely used for peach thinning despite being very expensive, time consuming and requiring a high number of trained personnel in a short span of time. Growers still count on hand thinning because the alternative chemical thinning methods did not provide consistent results. Nowadays other alternatives are tested, i.e., mechanical thinning, although the search of new efficient formulates will allow to speed up the operation at lower cost. Two new formulates (abscisic acid (ABA) and 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic add (ACC), have been recently proposed as chemical thinners for stone fruit. This research paper reports the results obtained in the last years with these two growth regulators ABA and ACC.
