摘要

The world is incurring a vast water deficit, reports Lester Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute. It is largely invisible because it can't be seen until wells go dry. It is historically recent because demand for water has tripled over the last half-century due to the spread of powerful pumps. And it is growing fast as water tables drop dramatically. In Yemen, a country of 19 million, the water table under most of the country is falling by roughly two meters a year. World Bank official Christopher Ward observes that "groundwater is being mined at such a rate that parts of the rural economy could disappear within a generation."
