Oilseed crop plantings in the EU are up slightly this year, but farmers still have “serious concerns” about the lack of agrochemicals due to EU policies, says European farmers and co-operatives group Copa-Cogeca. The oilseed rape crop is at risk of cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala) attacks because of the ongoing suspension of neonicotinoid insecticides. Furthermore, about 1 million ha of protein crops will be “jeopardised” if the European Commission goes ahead with its plan to ban pesticide use in “ecological focus areas” in proposals to simplify the EU Common Agricultural Policy.
