Co-operation between local offices in a developing country and international inspectorates who can pass on their expertise has proved to be a crucial element in the success of national development strategies for organic farming. Properly targeted financial support can both stabilize and accelerate this process. The Lome Convention between the European Union and the African, Caribbean and Pacific States (ACP) contains numerous preferential arrangements for financial and trade relations, including reductions in customs tariffs and free quotas for a range of goods exported by these states. These special arrangements are appropriately complemented by financial support for trade promotion and development. The agreements reached under the Lome Conventionalso apply in full to agricultural produce from organic farms, both in the form of raw materials and processed products.
