摘要

Accelerating industrialisation throughout the last century brought largely unseen and unrealised nutritional benefits to agriculture. Sulphur emissions from factories and power stations covered the land with evenly spread deposits of sulphur, an essential major plant nutrient. As a constituent of two essential amino acids (cysteine and methionine) sulphur is central to the manufacture of plant protein and, therefore, plant growth and crop production. Successful efforts in the last twenty years to cut industrial sulphur emissions and 'green up' the environment have largely removed this 'free' source of sulphur and led to increasingly severe sulphur deficiencies in a wide range of arable crops. Scientists have re-discovered the role of sulphur as a major plant nutrient. Sulphur is now regarded as the fourth major nutrient after NPK and as the second major nutrient after nitrogen in the United Kingdom.
