For most developing countries, agriculture is still the most important subsistence sector and a significant source of export revenue. In the tropics, intensive agriculture is particularly dependent on plant protection. But the use of pesticides creates numerous problems for the developing countries, such as inadequate product quality and pesticide residues in crops. The Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH — is endeavouring, through its pesticide service and other plant protection assistance, to support the developing countries in their efforts to improve quality control. Impeccable quality, of both the active substance itself and the appropriateness and conformity of labelling and packaging are vital to the effective use of pesticides.
