摘要

Conserving genetic diversity is of indescribable importance for future generations, since plant breeding is impossible without it. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization — FAO — has been concerned with the conservation and meaningful utilization of plant genetic resources for some 30 years now, having held its first Technical Meeting on Plant Exploration and Introduction as far back as 1961. In fact, it was on this occasion that the decision was made to establish an international, ex-situ conservation system which ultimately led to the setting-up of the very first gene banks. The Technical Conference on Exploration, Utilization and Conservation of Plant Genetic Resources took place in 1967, creating the basis for ex-situ conservation at international level, a task that was transferred to the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research — CGIAR — in 1972 which now has the largest ex-situ collections in the world.
