摘要

It is well known that oxytocin (OT) plays a primary role in reproductive functions, specifically in induction of myometri-cal contractions throughout parturition and in initiation of milk ejection during lactation. In addition, it has been shown that OT contributes to regulation of water-electrolyte homeostasis and central and peripheral control of cardiovascular functions (17, 24, 32). More recently, a substantial body of research has provided evidence for the prosocial, anxiolytic, antidepressive, and pain-relieving effects of oxytocin (2, 17, 24, 29, 32, 40). It has been shown that OT synthesis and/or secretion is stimulated during parturition, suckling, dehydration, hemorrhage, and stress (24, 42); however, its secretion may be reduced in cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure and hypertension (10, 25).
