Molluscs are one of the largest and most diverse animal groups, thriving in aquatic and terrestrial areas all over the world. In addition to their ecological roles as "ecosystem engineers" (14), many molluscan animals are essential for humans as food sources (e.g., snails, mussels, and squids) and decorative items (shells and pearls). Marine gastropods and bivalves, being mostly benthic in adult forms, often exhibit planktonic larval stages to spread their habitat (17, 58). The first larval form, trochophore larva, swims with a band of large ciliated cells called prototroch (41). This larval form is shared within Trochozoa (e.g., Annelida, Brachiopoda, and Nem-ertea), a subgroup of superphylum Lophotrochozoa (12). Molluscan trochophore larva then secretes shell materials, metamorphoses into a veliger larva, and swims with prototroch-derived velum, before settling for further metamorphosis into a benthic adult (17, 58). For successful recruitment of the adults, energy acquisition and balance during these swimming and settling periods are crucial. However, while morphological and behavioral changes are well understood, metabolic alterations during this period have been less addressed.
