to the editor: The last time I saw him was in the elevator of a hotel in Vienna, in late 2007. Regarding a work just finished in my laboratory, when we said goodbye I told him, "I sent you the manuscript for review and if you like it, we'll submit it to PNAS." Months later, when the article was accepted for publication in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America), he sent me an email that read: "excellent work, congratulations, onward for the next paper." Three days later, he died in his sleep at the young age of 61. That is how Steven Hebert was. It did not matter whether you had just published your best article that day, you had to be actively working on the next one.
