摘要

to the editor: We congratulate Rendell and colleagues (9) on a nicely executed crossover study regarding (he combined effects of heat and hypoxic acclimation on exercise performance in temperate conditions. They clearly demonstrate that during a heat acclimation protocol the addition of a concomitant nocturnal hypoxic exposure does not provide any benefits to performance in normoxic environment. Whereas we concur with the authors' findings, we would advise caution regarding such a general conclusion. Namely, the hypoxia-induced increment in erythropoietin (EPO) concentration would suggest that the hypoxic acclimation protocol was either insufficient or that the acclimation to hypoxia was perhaps confounded by the concomitant acclimation to heat. The authors interpreted their findings assuming that the hypoxic acclimation did not affect the acclimation to heat. However, on the basis of the observed EPO responses, one might also conclude that acclimation to hypoxia was impaired by the concomitant heat acclimation.
