摘要

This remarkable book provides a rich description of William James's long-lasting interest and engagement in psychical research. The bold hypothesis that functions as a guiding thread through the ambitious and careful argument asserts that the intelligibility of James's psychological and philosophical ideas depends on the recognition of the ontological, epistemological, and methodological value he assigned to psychical and supernatural phenomena. With a thrilling detective tone, the author tells how he found a large fund of about 1000 books at the Houghton Library of Rare Books and Manuscripts, constituting a collection of mostly esoteric or crank literature belonging to James, and thus displaying a substantial part of his non-academic sources, which have for the most part been systematically ignored by historians and critics. Interestingly enough, among these sources there is a special core of booklets identified in a rather mysterious list, which Alice Howe Gibbens James had handwritten and titled as "Valuable and much prized by WJ is."
