Protection of geological heritage in France: review and perspectives

— France has different legal tools to protect the geological heritage. If a milestone seems to have been taken in 2002 when the concept of natural heritage has been extended to geology, in fact, iń 2011 only nineteen nature reserves have been created on the basis of geological heritage. In the absence of regulatory protection, many local initiatives have increased the number of sites of geological interest under protection land framed, but the record of national geological heritage protection remains modest, compared to that of other European countries. In establishing in 2007 the national inventory of geological heritage, France has expressed its willingness to move forward. Although in practice this inventory is conducted unevenly and sometimes by adapting the methodology recommended, it will constitute a useful basis for improving the protection of geological heritage. However, it is regrettable that the recent implementation of a national strategy of creating protected areas including geological heritage has come and somewhat disrupt this process inventory. While it is too early to take stock of these initiatives, it is hoped that a coherent network of protected geological sites will soon emerge nationally, depending on the perspective that resources mobilized and thus political will. This achievement would allow France to position itself on the European scene. In the meantime, important work is done in many areas. In Lower Normandy, for example, protection of geological heritage will be supported by a solid inventory which should lead to the creation of protected geological sites.
