摘要

Acute pain results from most surgical and procedural hospital experiences. While treatment options include nonsteroidals and local anesthetic blocks, immediate-release opioids remain the primary treatment approach for most patients. Chronic opioid therapy has also been advocated for a subset of patients with chronic nonma-lignant pain [i]. Although long-term clinical trials are needed to better define patient selection and risk stratification, a recent expert panel concluded that chronic opioid therapy could be an effective management option for carefully selected patients with chronic pain [2]. The use of immediate- and extended-release opioids for the treatment of acute, chronic and cancer pain has been limited by side effects and, in certain patients, inefficacy issues [3]. Thus, the search for universally effective opioid analgesics without limitations from side effects, tolerance, hyperalgesia, addiction or abuse potential continues to be the holy grail of opioid pharmacotherapy. This journal issue presents a clinical trial on the use of a new analgesic, tapentadol, that may have a reduced side-effect profile compared with other traditional opioid analgesics [4]
