In September 2020, a report called Contradiction in Terms: European Union must align its waste ship exports with international law and green deal was published (see below), arguing that the EU's ship-breaking policy was "illegal", "unsafe and non-environmentally sound". We use these ships to transport more than 90% of consumer goods around the globe. But the way any country controls how end-of-life ships are managed is important, given they can pose significant health risks. Toxic substances, such as asbestos, lead and mercury, constitute the very fabric of a ship.
