What do you need to do to upgrade an older boat? Here at Boatbuilder we took a 1985 J/22 and upgraded it to put it into racing trim. Then we let our crew, consisting of the editor's sons and their friends, race it for the summer. They won the local Fleet 12 championship for the season, which says that you too can upgrade a boat to racing trim and do well in it. You can adapt our techniques to upgrade just about any older boat whether it be for racing or cruising. On our boat, we did the minimum amount of work needed to get it into racing trim and ready for the season, but, if you wish, you can take a little longer and bring your older vessel up to near perfect condition. You can then cruise it as far as you care to go.
