This study was conducted to investigate the status of soil organic carbon (SOC) under agroforestry and sole cropping system in Rajasthan, India. In the agroforestry system, moth bean (Vigna aconitifolia) and cluster bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) were planted in the inter-row spaces of five tree species: Daschrystus nutan [Dichrostachys cinerea], Colophospermum mopane, Acacia nilotica, A. senegal, and Prosopis juliflora. Representative soil samples were collected from four different soil depths (0-5, 5-10, 10-15 and 15-30 cm) at three lateral distances (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 m) from the tree trunk. Replicated soil samples were also collected from the same soil depth from surrounding fields, which were cultivated with sole crops of moth bean and cluster bean. SOC content was higher in the agroforestry system than in the sole cropping system. Significantly higher SOC was recorded within the tree rows in upper soil layers of 0-5 and 5-10 cm soil depth. Significantly higher SOC was also observed at the 0.5-m lateral distance compared with the other lateral distances within and between the rows at the agroforestry system.
