摘要

The peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter plays a key role in the movement of PD fluid in and out of the abdominal cavity known as the peritoneum. Unlike a double lumen central venous hemodialysis catheter, which can be used immediately after placement, the tissue around the PD catheter requires approximately two weeks to form a tight seal to avoid PD fluid leakage. Even with 'urgent start' PD in which PD exchanges start soon after catheter placement, proponents advocate low volume exchanges with the patient in the supine position to minimize fluid leakage (Ghaffari, 2012; Ghaffari et al., 2013).
