摘要

Many marine biologists will know Eve Southward as one half of the publishing partnership 'Southward and Southward', the other half being her late husband, the eminent researcher, Alan Southward. But Eve is a fine scientist in her own right, and is an expert on polychaetes, Pogonophora and hydrothermal vent fauna, amongst other groups. With her skill for identifying organisms, Eve has been in great demand on cruises, and has described many new species during her career - the pogonophoran Diplobrachia southwardae was named after her. Here Eve describes what it was like to be a student of marine biology in Liverpool and Plymouth in the 1950s and '60s, and explains how the accumulating interests of her fascinating career have been the result of a series of chances.
