Some disasters with serious consequences do not occur unexpectedly, just rarely, and hit suddenly with little or no warning. With respect to natural hazards, earthquakes share these characteristics, being the deadliest of natural hazards. Catastrophic earthquakes impact large areas and sometimes affect millions of people (Munich RE, 2015; Wallemacq and House, 2018). Even with elaborate crisis‐management strategies in place, such events place high demands on immediate intervention. Appropriate behavior by the individuals and communities directly affected has the potential to substantially mitigate the impact and enable emergency organizations to allocate their resources in the best possible way....
